"Hallelujah - a song with a life of its own" - The Independent "When Jeff played at the funeral of his father, Leonard Cohen was so moved that he permitted Jeff to cover his halleluja."ģ. Comment on post about a cover of "Ring of Fire" "even Leonard Cohen has said of Grace's Hallelujah, 'I wrote the lyrics, but it is definitely a Buckley song'"Ģ. Cathy Earnshaw's Amazon review of Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk If anyone can direct me to a valid source of the following references - or of any comment Cohen has actually made about Buckley's version of Hallelujah - I would be grateful.ġ. I find the claims suspect (although proving a negative, while philosophically possible, seems unlikely in this case), but this may have more to do with my profoundly cynical world view than with Leonard Cohen's take on Buckley's cover of Hallelujah. I've tried contacting the folks who made these references but they either don't provide email addresses or don't respond to my emails. I've been unable to track down a primary source through Google or other search engines.

Both had so much talent, and both died so very young.I'm interested in learning more about them.I would appreciate help in affirming or disputing references claiming Leonard Cohen has specifically bestowed his blessing on Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah." The problem is that none of these references direct the reader to a primary source, such as a print, radio, or TV interview with Cohen, the name of the person who overheard Cohen uttering the compliment, etc. Listened to a few of his father's songs too.the whole Buckley story just seems fascinating. It intrigues me even more because I found out that this was a club in NYC.and anything NYC centric usually gets me interested. the samples I've heard have been amazing. I bought Sketches.waiting for it to come in the mail. The lyrics in that song, it truly blows me away that he pretty much sums it up so perfectly - and sings it so perfectly. To me, it's the greatest song about love lost ever written. Grace has quickly shot up to be among my favorite albums.Lover, You Should've Come Over is without a doubt my favorite song from it. He had the most incredible ability to convey just about every emotion through his vocals. I have discovered Jeff Buckley over the past year and I am slowly becoming obsessed.

you guys should check it out if you haven't yet.Īre you by any chance refering to the live in Chicago DVD? And, are you saying compared to the acoustic version of EL the full band version sucks, or compared to the album version the live full band version sucks? he does some great covers in the sin-e set as well. his singing and stuff was fine, but they just turned it into a boring, conventional rock song by speeding the thing up. they just blew right through it and thought that by making it heavier, it would make up for the fact that the song sounded awful. i saw a dvd of his recently, which was filmed during the latter part of his career, and he fucking shat on "eternal life" with a full band. My favourite of his would have to be live at sin-e. although, sketches does have some solid material, particularly "new years prayer." i like that one a lot. I prefer grace to sketches because the former is a complete album while the latter is just incomplete songs that were intended for an album that was never finished.
